Summary

It was so different from my usual fantasy reads! And yes I confess I fell for the French cover first because seeing the English one months ago, that story didn’t catch my attention at the time。Sorry but have you seen the beauty of that French cover??And what you don’t see is the stenciled edge 😊Anyway back to the story。The plot is fairly simple as it’s the unexpected alliance of two people: Margaret a young huntress and Wes an alchemist in training in the hope to catch the mythical beast the hala。 There is a huge prize for killing it。Both have their own reason to participate in the competition。Margaret or Maggie is living alone most of the time in her mom’s manor。 Evelyn, her mom, an alchemist with huge ambition and a life’s quest has not been a mother for Maggie for a very long time now。After a drama split the family and traumatized Maggie, she is hoping that killing the hala will bring her mother back into her life for good。Wes is the son of migrants and after his father’s death, his mom and four sisters are struggling to survive。 Add to it racism and Wes has a big dream。 He wants to become a politician and change the society to have it more inclusive。 He wants to help people just like his family。 And the first step to becoming a politician is being an alchemist。He hopes that winning the hala will ingratiate him to Evelyn and that after countless rejections, he’ll finally be an apprentice。What really surprised me was the relationship between Maggie and Wes。Due to their personalities: grumpy and savage Maggie vs sunshine and professional flirt for Wes, they collide, rub each other the wrong way until they realize that deep down, they have more in common than what they thought。The very serious topic of intolerance and racism also surprised me。 Transposed into a fantasy world that still rang very accurate and contemporary。I took lots of little notes with spontaneous thoughts throughout my read, proof of the depth of that book。To sum it up, I’d say that under the pretense or a fantasy story, Allison Saft has created a unique magic system, asked very deep and pertinent questions about racism。 This is a slow burn love story that is much more believable with such protagonists。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Some parts of it were genuinely good as far as character development and progression goes but so much was left unanswered or unaddressed。 Like why was the wind whispering their names if nothing was going to come if it。 Why make the Halla seem magical and intelligent but limit its significance to alchemical matter that gets thrown away at the end anyway!? I enjoyed the characters falling in love in moments instead of the ever-present instalove nonsense that seems impossible to avoid these days bu Some parts of it were genuinely good as far as character development and progression goes but so much was left unanswered or unaddressed。 Like why was the wind whispering their names if nothing was going to come if it。 Why make the Halla seem magical and intelligent but limit its significance to alchemical matter that gets thrown away at the end anyway!? This was so slow and nothing seemed to happen most of the time。 The whole book was a build up to this huge event that only happened at the very end and got resolved in a couple of pages so it kinda was very underwhelming。

I heard this was reminiscent of Margaret Rogerson's books and it is。 This is really sweet, romantic and fairy tale adjacent。I don't know why we need to obfuscate the names of the clearly real world religions of Christianity, Judaism and Catholicism。 Seems like you should either make it less obvious or just flat out use the names。Everybody pretty much knew how they felt so I assumed I was near the end of the book, but when I looked I was only 33% done。 400 pages is not usually a long book but for I heard this was reminiscent of Margaret Rogerson's books and it is。 This is really sweet, romantic and fairy tale adjacent。I don't know why we need to obfuscate the names of the clearly real world religions of Christianity, Judaism and Catholicism。 Seems like you should either make it less obvious or just flat out use the names。Everybody pretty much knew how they felt so I assumed I was near the end of the book, but when I looked I was only 33% done。 400 pages is not usually a long book but for a YA fantasy romance it is far too long。 You can't sustain the romantic tension when everyone knows what they want and there's nothing keeping them apart。 If there was about 50 pages less waffling about their feelings (maybe some of that could have been spent on the actual hunt) this book would have been 5 stars。 。。。more

Better than I expected! The audio book does a slew of fantastic accents and I loved the slow growing of regard for each other between the two characters。 It moves slow though, with only brief moments of action till the very end, so if you’re looking for a riveting guns and magic fight book, calibrate your expectations。

Allison Saft has most definitely become an instant buy for me。 I still think about Down Comes the Night, but A Far Wilder Magic is great for completely other reasons。 The one overlapping reason is that Saft’s writing is absolutely gorgeous, poetic, and atmospheric。 This story versus her debut is more so character driven versus plot heavy。 The mythical hunt of this story takes a back seat, which may bother some, but that was the lesser of my interests。 I started out unsure about how I felt about Allison Saft has most definitely become an instant buy for me。 I still think about Down Comes the Night, but A Far Wilder Magic is great for completely other reasons。 The one overlapping reason is that Saft’s writing is absolutely gorgeous, poetic, and atmospheric。 This story versus her debut is more so character driven versus plot heavy。 The mythical hunt of this story takes a back seat, which may bother some, but that was the lesser of my interests。 I started out unsure about how I felt about these characters。 They felt so flawed。 They did not like each other and I did not like them。 I grew to love them as they grew to love each other。 You see what molds them from their grief in many forms, loss of loved ones, parental neglect, religious persecution, and choosing their path in life even if that path is not best for everyone in the end。 This is slow paced, but beautiful。 It’s not for everyone, but it is for me。 Bonus points- there’s a dog! 。。。more

Magical。 Absolutely loved this and the characters!!!! And their development - it felt so natural to me。 Paints a beautiful and eerie atmosphere and setting。 So many gorgeously written scenes that stuck with me, in particular when Wes goes back home and Margaret comes after him and that whole dinner and him leaving his family, on his knees imploring his mother。 One of my favorite things that tied into the characters is the foundation of their faith/culture and how it shapes them and their worldvi Magical。 Absolutely loved this and the characters!!!! I really enjoyed this book! It was pretty slow at the beginning, but once the plot got rolling it was very enjoyable to read。 There was a lot of prejudice against the main characters due to their lineages that are not really explained in a world-building sense。 The whole book I was waiting to read more about what happened in the world that the book takes place in, but I got to the end of the book and did not really get much of that。 I really liked the characters and this was a good read!

I like my fantasy/romance A plot/B plot to follow like that, rather than a romance in a fantastical setting。 The characters themselves were very well fleshed out and felt quite real, but I also didn't truly feel the chemistry between them - a requisite for a book that hinges on romance! Though the premise of the story is a really interesting one one (a dangerous Victorian-esque magical foxhunt), it's like Saft thought we'd be bored by the minutiae of that and decided not to focus on it too much。 I like my fantasy/romance A plot/B plot to follow like that, rather than a romance in a fantastical setting。 The characters themselves were very well fleshed out and felt quite real, but I also didn't truly feel the chemistry between them - a requisite for a book that hinges on romance! I did not enjoy this book, but all the reasons I didn't enjoy it are about my reading preferences。 I didn't like the author's writing style, I didn't like how predictable the story was, I didn't like the choice they made in the hunt (don't want to get into spoilers), and I couldn't relate to either character on an emotional level even though there were shared experiences to facilitate that experience- it relates back to the writing style。 All of that is completely about me, if I were going to ba I did not enjoy this book, but all the reasons I didn't enjoy it are about my reading preferences。 I didn't like the author's writing style, I didn't like how predictable the story was, I didn't like the choice they made in the hunt (don't want to get into spoilers), and I couldn't relate to either character on an emotional level even though there were shared experiences to facilitate that experience- it relates back to the writing style。 All of that is completely about me, if I were going to base this review on my personal reading experience I'd have given it a 1 star。 However, the book isn't bad, the story isn't bad, I'll never like what they did in the hunt, but that doesn't make it bad。 Therefore I'm giving it three stars。 I'm sure there are a lot of people who will truly enjoy this book, and should, it's just not for me。 。。。more

I really loved this book。The author did a great job creating an alternate version of the U。S。 circa 1920, maintaining the historic racism and prejudice toward immigrants and religious groups while adding a fantasy element in the form of alchemy。 It takes on our country's history while also exploring individual characters that struggle with what we would now recognize as neurodivergence, learning disabilities, trauma, and PTSD。 The book is written for a YA audience, but it is just as enjoyable as I really loved this book。The author did a great job creating an alternate version of the U。S。 circa 1920, maintaining the historic racism and prejudice toward immigrants and religious groups while adding a fantasy element in the form of alchemy。 It takes on our country's history while also exploring individual characters that struggle with what we would now recognize as neurodivergence, learning disabilities, trauma, and PTSD。 The book is written for a YA audience, but it is just as enjoyable as an adult reader。 The characters don't feel too young to be relatable to older readers, and their struggles are make them accessible to a broad audience。 。。。more

IDK。 。。。more
